Non-musical history for today: This date is a grand day for several nations and their subdivisions:

1821 – Panama Independence Day: Panama separated from Spain and joined Gran Colombia.
1843 – Ka Lā Hui (Hawaiian Independence Day): The Kingdom of Hawaii was officially recognized by the United Kingdom and France as an independent nation.
1861 – The Confederate States of America accepted a rival state government’s pronouncement that declared Missouri to be the 12th state of the Confederacy.
1885 – Bulgarian victory in the Serbo-Bulgarian War preserved the Unification of Bulgaria putting Bulgaria and Easter Rumelia together.

1917 – The Estonian Provincial Assembly declared itself the sovereign power of Estonia. Exactly one year later, Russia tried to punish Estonia, which set off the Estonian War of Independence.

1960 – Mauritania became independent of France.

1991 – South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia. Only five UN countries (Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria) recognize South Ossetia as a sovereign state. The Georgian government and all other UN member states regard South Ossetia as sovereign territory of Georgia occupied by Russia.
