TWO non-musical history items for today: 1851 – Moby-Dick: or, The Whale, a novel by Herman Melville, was published in the US. Outside of detailed whale hunting, the novel also dealt with the exploration of class and social status, good and evil, and the existence of God.
1889 – Pioneering female journalist Nellie Bly (aka Elizabeth Cochrane) began a successful attempt to travel around the world in less than 80 days, inspired by Jules Verne’s character Phileas Fogg. She completes the trip in 72 days.
