Non-musical history for today: 1884 – A mob in Cincinnati, Ohio,  attacked members of a jury that had returned a verdict of manslaughter in what was seen as a clear case of murder. Over the next few days, the mob would riot, assault some jurors, and burn down the courthouse. A young white German named William Berner and his accomplice, Joe Palmer, a man of mixed African and European descent, robbed and murdered their employer, William Kirk. They then dumped him in a nearby creek. The jury returned a manslaughter verdict despite the testimony of SEVEN different people to whom Berner had admitted his premeditation and execution of the murder. The judge gave 20 years and said it was an outrage. Newspapers called for protest. Tried separately, Palmer was convicted and hanged.
