Beeswax Vinyl Daily March 24, 2024

Non-musical history for today: 1989—In Prince William Sound in Alaska, the Exxon Valdez spilled 240,000 barrels of crude oil after running aground. It was most likely not because of a drunken captain. He was not on deck at the time. The third mate was supposed to be relieved by the second mate, but because the second was overworked, the third didn’t wake him. The ships’ radar (to inform of land) was broken up to a year before the incident, and Exxon didn’t fix it. So, truly the causes aren’t the important part here; the result is. And that led to one of the worst (second worst in amount of spillage) oil/environmental disasters in US history.

Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for March 24.

Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza.
