Non-musical history for today: 1497 – In Florence, Italy, supporters of Girolamo Savonarola burned cosmetics, art, and books in a “Bonfire of the vanities.” While that phrase/term has grown synonymous with good old-fashioned religious zealousness like book burnings, destruction of secular items, and so on. The initial use was for describing this event on February 7, 1497.
