Beeswax Vinyl Daily December 1, 2023

Non-musical history for today: 1824 – Since no candidate received a majority of the total electoral college votes in the election, the United States House of Representatives was given the task of deciding the winner in accordance with the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay and William Crawford were the primary contenders for the presidency. Jackson had 41.4% of the Electoral vote. Adams had 30.9%. Clay had 13%. Crawford has 11.2%. Oddly enough, Jackson and Adams both had John C. Calhoun as a running mate. After a long and arduous process, the majority of delegates (only one vote per state, and there were only 24 states at that time)returned the requisite 13-vote majority needed to elect John Quincy Adams as the 26th President of the United States.

Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for December 1.

Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza.
