Non-Musical history for today: 1896 – In Athens, the opening of the first modern Olympic Games is celebrated, 1,500 years after the original games were banned by the Roman emperor Theodosius I. Theodosius I banned them in 393 AD in order to promote Christianity. He deemed the games equivalent to paganism and had them done away with. Religion will get in the way every time.
